All 18 D&D 5e skills, their governing ability scores, and when they're used.
How skills work
Skills are specializations within ability scores. When The Raven calls for a skill check, you roll d20 + the relevant ability modifier. If you're proficient in the skill, you also add your proficiency bonus.
Your class, background, and race give you skill proficiencies at character creation.
All 18 skills
Strength
Athletics — Climbing, swimming, jumping, grappling, and other feats of physical exertion.
Dexterity
Acrobatics — Staying on your feet on unsteady ground, flipping, tumbling, and balancing acts.
Sleight of Hand — Pickpocketing, palm a coin, plant an object on someone, or perform a magic trick.
Stealth — Moving quietly, hiding from enemies, shadowing someone without being noticed.
Intelligence
Arcana — Recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, and planes of existence.
History — Recall lore about historical events, legendary people, ancient kingdoms, and past wars.
Investigation — Deduce conclusions from clues, find hidden compartments, figure out how something works.
Nature — Recall lore about terrain, plants, animals, weather, and natural cycles.
Religion — Recall lore about deities, rites, prayers, religious hierarchies, and holy symbols.
Wisdom
Animal Handling — Calm a spooked horse, sense an animal's mood, train a domesticated beast.
Insight — Read a person's mood, detect a lie, sense hidden motives.
Medicine — Stabilize a dying creature, diagnose an illness, treat wounds during a short rest.
Perception — Notice things using any sense — spot a hidden enemy, hear a door open, smell a gas trap.
Survival — Track creatures, navigate wilderness, find food and water, predict weather.
Charisma
Deception — Lie convincingly, disguise yourself, pass off a forgery, bluff in a game.
Intimidation — Coerce someone through threats, hostile actions, or physical displays.
Performance — Delight an audience with music, dance, acting, or storytelling.
Persuasion — Influence someone with tact, reason, and social grace — no threats or lies required.
Passive scores
Passive Perception is 10 + your Perception modifier (including proficiency if applicable). The Raven checks this automatically as you explore — you don't need to ask to "notice things"; The Raven tells you what your character perceives passively.
